Privacy Policy

Overview
Speedrun is a browser extension that generates AI-powered summaries of videos, articles, PDFs, and X posts you choose to speedrun. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.
Data We Collect
When you click "Speedrun" on a supported page, we collect and process the following data needed to generate summaries and audio narration:
- Source metadata: URL, title, publisher/site name, duration or word count, and thumbnail URL when available
- Page analysis: Before summarizing a page you haven't speedrun before, we send the page URL, title, site name, text content, and word count to our server to check whether the page is suitable for summarization
- Source content: Video transcripts/captions, article text, PDF text, and X post content/transcript text for the page you explicitly choose to speedrun
- Public comments: Top YouTube comments (up to 100) for the "What Viewers Said" feature
- Generated outputs: Summary text, audio narration, and timing metadata used for playback
- Device stats identifier: A random device ID generated by the extension and aggregate usage metrics (content minutes and listening minutes)
- Account information: If you sign in to Speedrun via Google or a magic link sent to your email, we store your user ID, email address, display name, and profile image URL to link your account across devices and sync your preferences
- Playback preferences: If you are signed in, your audio mode, caption setting, visual mode, and playback rate are synced to our server so they persist across sessions
- Diagnostic events: Error and crash telemetry used to keep the extension reliable
Data We Do Not Collect
- Account credentials or passwords
- Full browsing history collection or continuous page tracking
- Private messages, email content, or form inputs not required for summarization
- Cookies or tracking pixels
How We Use Your Data
The collected data is used solely for:
- Page analysis: Page content is analyzed to determine whether it is suitable for summarization before processing begins.
- Generating summaries: Selected source content is sent to our AI service to create readable summaries.
- Caching: Summaries are cached to provide faster responses for previously summarized sources.
- Comment analysis: Public comments are processed to generate the "What Viewers Said" section.
- Account and preferences: If you sign in, your account information is used to link your device and sync playback preferences across sessions.
- Usage stats: Aggregate listen/consume minutes are used for your in-extension stats.
- Reliability: Diagnostic events are used to monitor crashes and fix extension errors.
Data Storage
Local storage: The extension stores settings, recent speedrun history, a random device ID, dismissed digest IDs, and (if signed in) your account details in Chrome storage on your device.
Server storage: To support generation, caching, playback, and sharing, our servers (hosted on Convex) store source records (for example source ID/URL/title/publisher, duration, and thumbnail), extracted source content and optional comments, generated summary text, generated audio narration files with timing metadata, generation job metadata, pseudonymous device stats, and (if signed in) your account profile and playback preferences.
Third-Party Services
Speedrun uses the following third-party services:
- Convex: Backend infrastructure for API, database, and audio file storage
- OpenRouter: AI service provider for summary generation and page analysis
- Inworld: Text-to-speech provider for generated narration audio
- Supadata: Transcript retrieval for supported X post/video sources
- Sentry: Error monitoring and crash diagnostics
- Google: OAuth sign-in provider for account authentication
- Resend: Email delivery for magic link authentication
Source content, generated outputs, and diagnostics are processed through these services to provide Speedrun functionality and reliability. Please refer to their respective privacy policies for information on how they handle data, including network metadata such as IP addresses in their own logs.
Data Retention
Cached summaries are retained to improve service performance. Local extension data can be cleared by uninstalling the extension or clearing extension data in Chrome settings. A new pseudonymous device ID is generated when you reinstall the extension. Server-side records associated with a previous device ID may remain.
Public Share Links
Speedrun supports shareable summary pages. Anyone with a valid share link may be able to view the associated summary and audio, so you should avoid speedrunning and sharing content that is private or sensitive.
Digest (Web App)
The Speedrun web app at tryspeedrun.com offers AI-curated digests from popular channels. In addition to the extension data described above, the following applies to digest features:
- Channel subscriptions: If you subscribe to a channel, we store your subscription preferences and use your email address to deliver digest notifications via Resend
- Digest content: Generated digest headlines, summaries, podcast audio, and slideshow images are stored on our servers and viewable by anyone who visits the digest page
- Digest events: We record aggregate view and playback events to measure digest engagement
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Uninstall the extension at any time to stop all data collection
- Clear local storage data through Chrome's extension settings
- Contact us with questions about your data
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
